A short distance from the city of Chania, in the village of Alikianos, the Keritis River had been crossed since 1908 by a three-arched stone bridge, until February 2019 when it collapsed due to severe and prolonged bad weather.

The destroyed historic bridge is to be restored, but will be used only by pedestrians. For vehicle traffic and the upgrading of traffic conditions in the area, a new bridge will be built at a distance of approximately 80 metres from the old one.

For the new bridge, a system is created that emphasises its linearity as a whole rather than as three successive sections. This is accentuated by the fact that the upper part of each panel is covered with perforated sheet metal and, at night, with appropriate lighting, the bridge is transformed into a luminous line “passing” over the river. At the same time, during the day, pedestrians walking along the pavement maintain visual contact with the river and the historic bridge as a point of reference.
